Sip & Savor

Friday, February 21, 2014

A delectable dinner or a night on the town is enhanced when you pair it with a fine wine or cocktail. The flavor is even more delightful when you are able to support local wineries, distilleries and cocktail crafters.

Drinking Local

The northwest is an ideal location to indulge in locally grown wines, meads and more. The rolling hills provide a picturesque view, while the climate and rich soil offer an ideal base for wine grapes to grow. In fact, there are so many wineries that they coordinate release dates so that visitors to the region can have the best experience possible.

Tastings & Releases

Participating wineries in both the Spokane and Walla Walla regions will uncork their latest vintages. This is your chance to take home bottles of your favorite, or experience the multitude of options available. Winemakers are usually on hand to discuss the process and many of the wineries will hold their own special events.

Spring sippers will be able to bookend a week of exploring the region with releases in Walla Walla the first weekend of May, and the Spokane wineries uncorking the second weekend. In the fall you’ll be able to take advantage of the crisp autumn weather in Walla Walla, and visit the weekend before Thanksgiving to spend extra time with family or to take a bottle as a hostess gift to accompany your turkey dinner.

Some of the Essentials

In addition to the wines that dot the area, there are distilleries that use locally sourced ingredients to produce liquors that are uniquely Northwestern. Master mixologists behind the bars at some of the area’s restaurants and night spots can craft a cocktail that fully utilizes the diversity of regional options.
