California Spring Song, pastel

Opening Doors to the Inner Landscape

Marsha Connell’s plein air paintings in pastel, oil and watercolor combine observation—mirroring the natural world—with improvisation—giving voice to the “spirit of place”. Watching, listening, hiking, dancing, trusting intuition and gesture, infuses her painterly representation with an energetic and abstract sensibility.

Marsha Connell was nurtured in her love for art, nature, and learning by her grandfather, Samuel Riss, watercolor painter and Renaissance farmer in Upstate New York. A graduate of Skidmore College and San Francisco State University, she has been on the art faculty of Santa Rosa Junior College for many years, and visiting faculty at Sonoma State University. She’s been an artist in residence at Pepperwood Preserve and in many Sonoma County Schools.

Marsha has exhibited regionally and internationally, and her work is in many collections. She is Chair of the Steering Committee of the Sonoma County Art Trails Open Studios program and Co-Chair of the Art Trails Gallery at Corrick’s Team, in Santa Rosa, showing her paintings with many other fine artists. She is one of the artist-owners of the Upstairs Gallery in Healdsburg. She’s presented art workshops and lectures from California to Alaska, New Mexico, Oregon, New York, Mexico and France.

Her paintings in your home or business can open doors to the inner landscape.
