2009 Design Editorial Responses
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works” - Steve Jobs
- If our title is " what is old is new again..." how would this statement reflect your work?
- The kitchen has once again become the “Living room” of most family homes. The “eat in” kitchen is back and is reflected in the combination of a sitting/media room, a place for the family to gather to discuss the activities of the day, to do school work and to entertain. Everyone always ends up in the Kitchen. Laminate counter tops are back and so is linoleum.
- What is the best “green” example for the least cost?
- The best example for the least cost is easily in green countertops. These are made with recycled particleboard with water-based sealant that produces co emissions. Linoleum flooring is also low cost with high environmental benefits. True Linoleum is made from linseed oil, which is a renewable resource and hypoallergenic.
- How can one gradually become “green?”
- One can gradually become green by 1) becoming aware of the numerous green products out there. Then, 2) think about your home and the steps you can take to become more “green”. In the kitchen, do you use the dishwasher? You should. Do you use powdered dishwasher detergent instead of liquid? Do you recycle? Do you compost? Do you save on water use when you can?
- For major projects like kitchen remodeling, do some research. Look at sustainable cabinets like those made of eco wood and those that are formaldehyde free, and cabinets with water based finishes so there is no out-gassing. Consider using recycled glass tiles for the backsplash. Use energy efficient lighting. There is a lot a person can do to gradually become green.
- If money were no cost what would you do to design or build green?
- I would build a green house with about 1800 square feet that had a garden with one hunk of a gardener!
- Your dream project would be?
- My dream project is anything anyone can throw at me. Something challenging with a large budget is always ideal.
- The work for which you are most proud is?
- The work for which I am most proud is the large home designed and installed for a family that had numerous needs. Kitchen, Caterer’s kitchen, Cookbook Room, Laundry Room, Cabana Kitchen, Craft Room, Theater Kitchen, Game Room, and Wine Room (and other small areas). The main Kitchen and Caterer’s Kitchen won international awards. It was very satisfying to see peers and clients pat you on the back and say, “job well done.”
- If you weren't an Architect, Designer, Builder, Furniture maker what profession would you have chosen?
- I would probably have gone for being a builder. I like working with people, being creative, organizing projects, and seeing the end result of a lot of hard work.
- As a potential client what is one thing about your work that would make me choose you, your firm or furnishings?
- The one thing about our firm is that we are good communicators and listeners. Tell us what your dream is and we can create it!
