The southeast has a food culture that is unique. Abundance from the ocean, waterways and regional crops offers a variety of flavors that can be combined in almost endless ways. The diversity in available options further expanded as globalization brought new ingredients and ideas regarding food preparation. The increasing assortment of fine cuisine that is both locally focused and world inspired is one of the draws of the area, and combined with the sights and charm it’s no wonder that nearly 4 million people visit Charleston every year.
The Charleston Wine + Food Festival
One of the ways that both visitors and locals can celebrate the culture of fine dining in the southeast is by attending the Charleston Wine + Food Festival. Established in 2006, it has quickly become a favorite event for foodies and wine connoisseurs.
In addition to showcasing the cuisine of the region, the Festival is also a fundraising event. It supports the community by promoting educational opportunities and through culinary scholarships at local universities. To date, over $325,000 has been raised and distributed. It also selects a Culinary Community Partner each year to showcase and promote.
Grow Food Carolina
The Community Partner for the 2014 Festival is Grow Food Carolina, which is South Carolina’s first non-profit local food hub. Grow Food Carolina is dedicated to building a more abundant and diverse food economy by helping to market and distribute locally grown produce to restaurants, grocers and cafeterias. The community benefits from access to fresh produce and the farmers benefit by being able to keep their products local.
The 2014 Festival
Over 80 culinary and wine events comprise the 2014 Festival. Signings, tastings, dinners, classes and a Culinary Village will keep visitors busy. There is so much to do that the Festival even released a smartphone app on both Apple and Android products to help Festivalgoers track the events and keep up on social media related to the event, just search for the Charleston Wine and Food Festival in the app store.
